Authoritarian and nationalistic regimes work hard to discredit science and experts because objective truth threatens their power. Science reveals complexity. Authoritarianism thrives on simplicity. Discrediting experts fuels conspiracy thinking—and conspiracies are easier to manipulate and weaponize.
Social media algorithms amplify this dynamic, rewarding engagement over accuracy and turning lies into viral content. As the Columbia University report The Pursuit of Truth makes clear: billionaires and tech platforms refuse to stop disinformation because it fuels engagement—and profit. When truth becomes less valuable than the clicks that lies generate, that’s technofascism.
But when real journalism and honest accounts are shared, they can flood the feed with truth—breaking through the algorithm and disrupting the spectacle of authoritarian lies.
